We Bought A House!!

Friends, rejoice with us……. WE BOUGHT A HOUSE!

Hold on. Did you hear that?!

We have a house!

Better yet, we bought the RIGHT house. It fits us perfectly and is the ideal next step from the Shoebox for our family.

It’s funny… all last year while we house hunted I said that I felt like God wouldn’t LET us buy the wrong house as one after another proved not to be “it.” Turns out that’s pretty much how it went.

Amusingly we found this house on the exact day I laid my heart bare and published this post on my big mistake. I was frustrated with the entire house search and done with looking to buy. My heart and brain switched to rental mode.

So when Caveman called me and asked what we were doing at 11 a.m. that morning because he had secured us a house showing… well, I was THIS close to saying “just look at it yourself.” I wasn’t angry; I was just checked out of the house search. El Fin. Done.

It turned out that Preschooler Energy Management dictated getting the kids outside, so we joined Caveman in looking at this one last house. As we were getting the kids out of the car, I looked at the simple green house, glanced up the street and heard myself vocalize,”I hesitate to say this, but this feels right.”

It was.

Β Once we walked in the door I knew it would work. It’s a simple 3 bed/1 bath ranch-style. The inside is beautiful (although we chose to do some updates). It has a backyard big enough for a garden and for the kids to play. There is a garage for Caveman’s projects and tools. The location is wonderful. The laundry machines are IN the kitchen, a detail about which I am probably disproportionately excited. πŸ™‚

At 1,000 square feet, this house is even smaller than the one from which we downsized to start our family. After 4.5 years of living in our Shoebox apartment, we now return to a single-family house hooked on living small. This modest home feels natural, easy.

There is no doubt in our mind that this is the house for which we waited, prayed, hoped.

Everything during the buying process went quickly and smoothly. The sellers even put a new roof on the house and garage.

It is going to be SO beautiful once Caveman completes the intro projects. πŸ˜€ I cannot WAIT to share before/during/after photos with you, but for now…

New house

…I introduce The Green House, as the boys call it.

The name fits, I think. First because the house is, um, green. Secondly because we hope to continue exploring the direction we’ve dabbled in in the Shoeboxβ€”a more sustainable, urban-homesteading, intentional, budget-minded, GREEN lifestyle.

So there you go. πŸ™‚ Can you believe it?! We are in a constant state of awe and stunned gratefulness at the goodness and provision of God.

And now we’re elbow-deep in renovations. πŸ™‚

Here are a couple snaps of the first day doing work in the home:

We humbly thank God for gently leading us and providing this wonderful house in His own timing. It wasn’t always an easy road, but we are grateful for the journey and His constant presence. All praise to the KING!

I am so excited for you!! I don’t comment much online – my days of being in the “young mother” mode are long over, but I do remember how much I loved my house with the little galley pass-thru kitchen with the washer, dryer, stove and frig down one side. Kitchen sink and counter under the wide window! The laundry could get down while making dinner, the machines were the same as counter space in usefulness, and it kinda MAKES you keep up with the folding and putting away!!
Anyway, thank you, Evelyn, for sharing your home and family with us, for sharing, too, your ideas, challenges, and always, best of ALL, your faith!
    Blessings, Gloria

Hi Gloria, the efficiency of having all the main house hold appliances right there next to the kitchen just sounds dreamy! πŸ™‚ Thank YOU, Gloria, for your kind words of encouragement. I love having you along on our ride!

Congrats, a house means stability, family, and love in my eyes. I think it is fun to decorate and buy things you like.

I would be hard pressed to even name more than two times that I have EVER posted a reply online.
I came to your website via becomingminimalist… And I have to tell you that it is a HUGH sigh of relief. In an area where people seem to be keeping up with the Joneses more than most… I get discouraged when I tell family and friends that I am INTENTIONALLY looking for a house under 1000 square feet with only one bathroom.
For some reason- the bathroom is a huge mental block for most people.
What was your experience with this? Am I nuts? Do you have any plans for adding another bath?
Good work mama. May God watch over, and bless your sweet family.

No sooner than I posted my reply – the house we wanted got sold out from under us.
I know God has bigger plans… But my human ones sometimes get in the way…

Hi Erika, What a gift to have you comment on Smallish since you don’t pipe up often. πŸ˜‰ Thank you for sharing. No, you’re not nuts at all! Actually, yes–the bathroom was a big hangup for family on our side too. We could someday add on to the master bedroom and add another bath or 1/2 bath, but it’s not in our plans. Of course there are times (like, daily!) when someone needs the toilet and it is already occupied. But in those instances we do what everyone else in the world does when a bathroom is unavailable: we wait. We make it work. πŸ™‚
